Uppsala Workshop in Financial and Business History: 03-09-2026 to 04-09-2026

On 3–4 September 2026, the Uppsala Centre for Business History (UCBH) and the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) hosted the third Uppsala Workshop in Financial and Business History.

Under the theme "Corporate Finance and Organization in Transition" researchers and PhD students discussed work in progress on the historical development of corporate finance, ownership and organization. The event was the final one in a series of workshops held over several years.

The programme had four sessions on "Governance & Credit" and "Innovation & Transition." Keynotes by Caroline Fohlin and Andrea Colli opened and closed the programme. Papers ranged widely, from Imperial Russia and British India to Weimar Germany, East German privatization and Ukraine's fertilizer sector in the 2010s. Each paper had a 45-minute slot, about a third of which was set aside for discussion, so presenters received detailed feedback.

From the GerHisFin project, Cédric Kpalété (SAFE) presented his paper "Credit Allocation in Transition: Relationships, Asset Composition, and Firm Outcomes in Weimar Germany." Loris Machmedow (SAFE) presented his work on knowledge spillovers and breakthrough innovations in the German Empire (1877–1914) online.

We thank Ann-Kristin Bergquist, Anders Ögren, Marius Liebald and Simon Billinger for the invitation and the excellent organization.
